If only you believe strong enough
Once upon a time there was a poor student who had no more Mom and Dad. She studied hardly, visited all the lectures and at night, she worked in a bar. Her name was Maja.
It was on New Year’s Eve. It was bitterly cold outside and Maja’s evil landlady ad switched off the heating in the apartment as she was on holidays herself. Maja was sitting over her books – she also studied during the holidays. But how could she remember anything when she felt cold and hungry? And in addition, Maja urgently needed to check a few things on the Internet.
„Well”, Maja thought. “There’s no harm ingoing to the Internet cafe for some dry bread and hot chocolate.”
The internet cafe was right around the corner from Maja’s apartment. She sat down by a computer and first of all called up her emails.
“Nothing but spam again”, Maja sighed. If only I had a friend who sometimes sent me something nice”
She already wanted to delete the mail unread when she noticed something unusual.
„Your three wishes will come true today. “ The sender was Fairy_Godmother@land-of-faiytales.com. It sounded so ridiculous. But still, Maja knew she could not sleep before she found out what this email said.
"Congratulations, you are this year’s winner of our contest ‚Your three wishes will come true today‘. Send an empty email back to this address and your three most secret wishes will come true within the next 24 hours.”
"Such a nonsense“, Maja thought. “This cannot work, never. But on the other hand, what did she have to lose? She clicked the ‘Reply’ button and sent back an empty email. Then she went back to her cold room and fell asleep.
The next morning, Maja woke up late. Carefully she held one of her feet out from under the blanket to check how cold the apartment was now. But – a miracle – the heating worked again and her room was cozy and warm.
Happily Maja jumped out of her bed and ran to the small fridge in the corner. And indeed, where there was nothing left but some margarine and bread the day before, she now found the most wonderful fancy food. Maja laid the table and started to eat.
In a hurry she got dressed and went out to check if her third wish had come true, too. And indeed, her account statement showed that someone had transferred two million Euro to her bank account.
Overwhelmed Maja sat down on the ground. All of a sudden, all her sorrows were gone. Finally, she was the lucky one.
"And then, Mommy“, the little fairy asked.
„Well, and if she has not died by now, she has probably spent her millions. “
„What a stupid fairy tale!“
"Humans are stupid,. Just take this Maja. Instead of calling her landlady regarding the heating, she prefers to freeze and afterwards it’s the fault of the old lady, of course.”
“So then the landlady switched on the heating again?”
"What do you think? And as she was not as evil as Maja always thought, she left all the food in the fridge.”
“And the millions?”
„This was a mistake of her bank. But as this was only the black money of some gangsters, nobody ever complained and she could keep the money.“
„And what about the email?“
„I had not finished yet. Listen.”
„So Maja was sitting on the ground in front of the account statement printer. Her three dearest wishes had come true, she had a warm home, enough to eat and more money than she could spend.
“Hey Maja, why are you sitting there on the ground? Are you sick?”
Maja looked up and saw her fellow student Ronny.
“Oh no, I’m fine. But something incredible has just happened to me.”
Come on, I’ll invite you to the cafe and there you can tell me everything“
So the two of them returned to the internet café and Maja told Ronny about the email and its consequences.
„Cool, why does nobody send me such emails?“Ronny was thrilled. What a crazy story. But how did they know your wishes?”
"Well, this is the catch. So far I thought I had everything I ever wanted now but coming to think about it…”
"But why? What else do you want?“
„Nothing substantive. I didn’t want to be alone all the time Just imagine to spend the New Year’s Eve learning and then go to bed early…”
"Oh, OI can help you, I’ll take care of you now.“
“And if I don’t have enough time left to learn then?”
“But I can handle this, too. And now that you have the millions, you don’t need to work anymore.”
They left the cafe together and walked through the streets of the town for a while. Then Maja returned to her room which seemed much friendlier to her now.
“Ms. Krause?”
Maja went to her landlady’s living room.
“Oh, Ms. Holm, you are already back?”
„Yes, what a lucky coincidence. I am so sorry that you had to be in this cold apartment all the time. The heating broke down.”
Maja’s heart skipped a beat. So Ms. Holm did not let her freeze just because she was evil.
„Would you like to have dinner with me? I cooked far too much.“
Maybe Ms Holm was not as bad as she had ever thought and maybe she had really found the home here which she had always desired. Maja nodded her head. When she went to her room to take off her coat Ms. Holm Called „By the way, there is a registered letter for you, I left it on your desk.”
Nervously, Maja opened the envelope. Could this be the test result she had been waiting for all month? Passed with distinction”. Maja fell down on her bed. Only now she was really happy.
"Well, my little fairy, now it’s really time to sleep.“
"So the fairy God Mother fulfilled Maja’s true wishes?“
„But what did you think? The Fairy Godmother never makes mistakes. She knows the wishes of the humans precisely.“
„When I’m old enough, Mommy, I also want to be a Fairy Godmother”
The fairy Mom kissed her child on the forehead and then went to her computer to check the emails the Fairy Godmother had told her to check. Who will be this year’s winner of the contest “your three wishes will come true today” she thought.
